Give the Elderly some space, please

Holiday time - many of us are out shopping for food or gifts. This means that the stores are full of people. The lines are long. The kids are screaming 24/7. And everyone is in a relatively bad mood.

I was in the local Walmart and I got irritated at how people were treating the elderly. I hate hearing people say - "Excuse Me!" - in a loud and aggressive way. The elderly have a hard time hearing, they have trouble understanding all the changes that have taken place in the stores - self checkout, etc. - and they are stressed out being out of their comfort zone - which is their home.

I was at a self check-out station - working away at buying my stuff. Lines were long. Several of the regular cashier lines had backed up. An elderly man was in one of those lines. He was blocking - people were having trouble getting around him to the other self check-out booths. I was extremely annoyed at how badly people were behaving. No respect for the elderly. You don't lose your temper with an elderly person who doesn't realize that he is blocking. It isn't his fault that the lines are so long. It's the fault of the store.

It would be nice if there was a local grocery store that was designed just for the elderly. Only elderly people - over 60 years old - allowed to shop inside. I think we need more facilities that are just for the elderly. We have a larger amount of elderly these days. People need to give them some space. They deserve better treatment.

Why do people treat the elderly like dirt? I blame the fact that religion is not as strong as it used to be. Religion stressed the importance of treating each other with respect and kindness. Without religion - we are no better than savages or barbarians. It is sad to see civilization declining.

In my mind, God is always watching. He takes note of anyone that treats others badly. He never forgets. He has a special plan for all of you that treat people poorly - what goes around comes around.

Take care,

LK
